Hardware Upgrades-> Windows:
Many modders believe that adding a window to their case makes the Xbox look better. It allows you to see into the case, and allows light to come out. The most common locations for windows on an Xbox are the case jewel and over the dvd drive, but you can put a window anywhere on the top of the case easily.
- Jewel windows: Whether you plan on clearing the stock jewel or buying an aftermarket jewel, if you want light to come up through it you will have to remove the stock jewel and cut a hole underneath.
First remove the stock jewel. There are several techniques for getting the stock jewel off:
- Freezer: This usually only works on older models. Put the case lid in the freezer overnight, then hit the back with a hammer. If you're lucky, it will pop right off. If you're unlucky the jewel might come off in pieces.
- Hair Dryer: If you want to keep the stock jewel, this is usually the best choice. Aim a hair dryer on high at the BACK of the jewel for 10 full minutes. Then use a couple small screwdrivers or a knife to pry the jewel off carefully while the sticky stuff is still gooey.
- Dental Floss: Cut off a couple feet of floss, and work a loop of the floss under the edge of the jewel. Hold both ends and saw back and forth with it, and it should cut through the double-sided sticky pad holding the jewel down.
- Drill: One of my favorites, if you don't plan on keeping the jewel. Skip right to the next step and drill the hole out from the back, going right through the old one.
