GentooXis a version of Gentoo Linux, created especially for the Xbox. GentooX requires a modchipor a softmodto run properly.

Gentoox Linux is an adaptation of the popular source based Linux distribution called Gentoo. It retains all the features of the original (portage, sysvinit etc...) but has a patch system created from the ground up, by myself, which is specifically designed for Gentoox. "Magic" (as I have labelled it) allows users to install new software, upgrade their kernel and fix bugs. To learn more about magic, run "magic usage" once you have installed Gentoox.

Gentoox runs along side games - you get 3 choices during installation: E, F and Native. Both E and F create a loopback filesystem meaning that none of your drives are formatted during installation (except for cache partitions). If you choose "Native", then your F: partition is formatted to ReiserFS (making it inaccessible to Xbox applications).

Gentoox can be loaded via a .xbe file, or from a Cromwell based BIOS (which can be flashed to your modchip during installation). When using E or F installations, you are totally risk free - if you dont like Gentoox, simply delete all the files it installs (about 7 in total) and its gone." - Quoted from the GentooX website.

Gentoox comes in three versions:

Home -The "beginner" version and has many software packages pre-installed and pre-configured for instant usability straight out of the box.

Pro - The barebones version, for people that want to customize their install for their needs. Pro doesn't have a graphical user interface let alone any "useful" applications. Pro is a bare minimum installation for booting the system, the entire customization of the OS is left in the user's hands. The user can compile and install any packages from source as they would like. This is why Gentoo Linux is acclaimed as one of the harder OS's for newbies, it's based and installed from the source code, this allows you to pick and choose packages and applications you would like to use.

MCE - Gentoox Media Center Edition is more of a "plugin", or a module, than a separate distribution. It allows you to have a Media Center along with Gentoox Home or Pro.

Gentoox also has two tools for performing rescues and recovery:

Sparkle - The filesystem rescue utility.
Resctoox - The Gentoox Linux rescue utility.

Gentoox uses a modified version of the Xbox-Linux BIOS known as Cromwell. Gentoox Loader has advanced features such as the ability to flash the Xbox's BIOS via HTTP and even the ability to boot a Linux kernel via FTP. GentooX can also be run via any type of a softmod or modchip using either the Cromwell BIOS or any other third party BIOS. For legal reasons, it's best to use or refer to the Cromwell BIOS. Running an hacked BIOS is considered illegal by some.

GentooX can support and run nearly any Linux application compiled for Gentoo. You can compile applications right on your Xbox if you would like. You can also use the famous Gentoo package manager "Portage". There is virtual keyboard support, this allows you to use a QWERTY interface on your screen. Some general software for the Home installation consists of XMMS media player, Text editing utilities, Internet browsers, IM clients and other useful utilities. From installation you have the abilities to choose from KDE or XFCE for your user interface.

KDE is more ram intensive, it's a bit slower than XFCE.
XFCE is an minimalist window manager, it's less ram intensive and it runs faster than KDE.

The ISO's are in between, 250 MB for the Pro version, 500 MB for the MCE version, 800 MB - for the Home version.

Installation

The installation can be done two ways: via an installation disc or over ftp, provided that the user can get an FTP daemon running on their Xbox. Gentoox can be installed in three different manners. The first involves creating a loopback installation on the E:\ partition on the Xbox's hard drive, the second is similar to the first except it utilizes the F:\ partition. Finally, Gentoox may format the entire F:\ partition and use it as a native Linux partition. Gentoox can then either be run from a Dashboard, such as XBMC, or boot off a modified version of the legal Cromwell BIOS known as Gentoox Loader.
